Our History

Founded in 1978, InterAct grew from the merger of three community agencies: the Rape Crisis Center, Women’s Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention Services to become known as The Family Violence Prevention Center, Inc. In 1985, the organization adopted InterAct as its call name, signifying the interaction of crisis intervention, recovery from trauma, and creating a safe, independent future.

By 2009, InterAct’s highly effective model of one-stop, wraparound services for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence spanned Wake County’s 12 municipalities. The agency conducted a $5 million capital campaign to purchase and renovate the former YWCA at 1012 Oberlin Road in Raleigh. With the opening of the Family Safety & Empowerment Center, people and families struggling with abuse receive InterAct’s crisis intervention programs and take a step toward a life free from violence. InterAct offers tools and services to educate and assist clients in becoming self-sustaining and safe.

GlaxoSmithKline and Mutual of America have both recognized InterAct with national best practice awards, and we are routinely called upon to share the success of our model with other organizations across North Carolina, the Southeast, the United States, and internationally.

Who We Serve

Today in America, one in three women and one in seven men will experience sexual violence, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic and sexual violence, physical and mental health, housing insecurity, income, and employment are deeply intertwined. Recognizing this connection and offering holistic services, InterAct enables clients to create successful futures for themselves and those they love. We serve all people 16 and older who need our services. Those 15 and younger are referred to WakeMed Children’s Emergency Department.
