There are countless stories of hope and transformation that come from campers at Camp HOPE, but one camper in particular reminded everyone what true courage looks like.
At first, he stood at the bottom of the rock-climbing wall, unsure if he could do it. Fear and doubt crept in, but he decided to try anyway. His first attempt didn’t take him very far. Neither did his second. But each time he came back, he climbed a little higher than before. With every attempt, his confidence grew—and so did the cheers from the campers around him. Surrounded by encouragement, he gave it one more try and finally reached the top. When he looked down, the smile on his face said everything: he had conquered his fear.
But his journey didn’t stop there.
Earlier in the week, he had faced another challenge when he didn’t pass the swim test. It was a disappointing moment, and it would have been easy to walk away. Instead, he listened to the encouragement of the friends he had made at camp and decided to try again. This time, he pushed through—and he passed.
By the end of the week, his courage, perseverance, and growth had not gone unnoticed. He was honored with the Courage Award, a recognition of the bravery he showed in facing challenges and refusing to give up.
His story didn’t end when camp did. His mom shared that since returning home from Camp HOPE, his self-confidence is at an all-time high. He is more outgoing, smiles more often, and makes friends with ease.
What began as a week filled with uncertainty became a powerful reminder that with support, encouragement, and a little courage, young people can discover strengths they never knew they had.
